The basic architecture of the Intouch WebPoint system accessible from the Internet involves the following components;
- Browser software running on "public" computers.
- The Internet itself.
- Web server software running on a web server.
- A database for retrieving customer details and storing transactions.
- A (secure) payment processing system for financial transactions.
This diagram shows an eCommerce system in generic terms and is used as a basis for the rest of this document. There are some aspects of particular importance;
- There is no requirement for payment processing to be performed directly on the Web Server. It is not uncommon for a single Payment Processing Gateway to be used by many hosted sites.
- For security reasons, the database that stores customer transactions should not reside on the web server itself. Ideally, a dedicated database server without a direct connection to the Internet will be used for medium and long term data storage.
